More on the attack of a woman on Pope at midnight mass - watch video

Tuesday 30 December

A psychiatric patient intended to bite Pope Benedict in the neck during a foiled attack at the Midnight Mass at St Peter’s over Christmas.

Erwin Niederberger, the press officer for the Swiss Guards, told the Swiss online magazine20 Minuten that the hooded figure tackled to the ground by the Pope’s security people (see below) on Christmas eve was a mentally disturbed Italian woman. Neither Benedict XVI nor the rest of the congregation seemed fazed by the incident.

Fr Federico Lombardi, who heads the Vatican’s press office told the Associated Press on December 25 that he thought that the attacker wanted to greet the Pope.

“The woman wanted to bite the Pope in the neck,” said Niederberger.

According to Niederberger the woman is a Italian residing in Switzerland where she is in psychiatric care. The Swiss news agency claims that the woman was motivated by the reports in which the Pope’s Christmas message had been interpreted as a direct attack on homosexuals and transsexuals. She is now in police custody. It is unclear whether she will be returned to Switzerland.

Why Fr. Fernando Suarez distanced himself from CBCP's anti-Arroyo call

"Healing priest" Father Fernando Suarez has distanced himself from the recent pronouncements of five members of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines that called for a change in leadership -- a stand that is deemed against President Arroyo and her administration.

"Pwede ba na 'wag naman nating i-destabilize ang bansa na hirap na hirap na. Let’s just wait (Is it possible not to destablize our country that's already hurting?)," he told ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau in Heston in Middlesex, England.

He, however, said that the things that the five bishops did were according to God's will and with the people in mind.

"I’m just hoping and praying na kagustuhan ng Diyos ang ginagawa ng bawat isa para sa ikagaganda at ikauunlad ng ating bayan (I'm just hoping and praying that whatever each of them did was in accordance with God's will and with the people and the country in mind)," Suarez said.

Financial Crisis 2009: Pope says Christians must resolve to help others

The Pope said: "This year closes with the awareness of a growing social and economic crisis, which now involves the whole world; it is a crisis that requires of everyone more moderation and solidarity, especially to help people and families in greater difficulty," he said.

Catholic parishes, organizations and aid agencies already are preparing to help record numbers of people in the coming year, the pope said, "but the collaboration of everyone is necessary."

"Even if on the horizon more than a few clouds are gathering over our future, we must not be afraid," Pope Benedict said.

"Our greatest hope as believers is eternal life in the company of Christ and the entire family of God," he said. "This great hope gives us the strength to face and overcome the difficulties of life in this world." [Cindy Wooden]
