Disciplines and practices during the Lenten Season
The Lenten Season begins this Wednesday, February 25th. Here is a list of disciplines and practices during this season to help you in your Lenten journey:
1. The practice of not eating meat during Lent is called ABSTINENCE.
2. Greater ALMSGIVING (charity) during Lent is a way we celebrate God’s generous mercy.
3. The season of Lent begins on ASH WEDNESDAY.
4. The holy oils are blessed for use during the coming year at the CHRISM MASS.
5. One goal of our Lenten journey is our CONVERSIO to live a more fruitful life.
6. The CROSS is a central symbol of the season Lent.
7. Jesus began his public ministry with forty days in the DESERT.
8. The ELECT will receive the Easter sacraments at the great Virgin on Holy Saturday.
9. FASTING is one of the main Lenten disciplines.
10. During Lent we ask for and extend FORGIVENESS.
11. The season of Lent is FORTY DAYS long.
12. Holy Week begins with our celebration of PALM SUNDAY.
13. On Palm Sunday and Good Friday we hear accounts of the PASSION of Jesus.
14. PENANCE, along with remembering our baptism, is central to our observance of Lent.
15. An increase in PRAYER is another discipline of this holy season.
16. A SCRUTINY is a rite celebrated during Lent to help the elect and all of us examine our faith lives.
17. The STATIONS OF THE CROSS are a very popular Lenten devotion.
18. The empty TOMB is the beginning of Jesus’ resurrected life.
19. The TRANSFIGURATION Gospel on the Second Sunday of Lent anticipates Easter.
20. Violet is the royal color we use throughout our Lenten days.
